Google's local search service is now out of beta for the US and Canada, and not far off that step in the UK. See http://www.w3reports.com/?itemid=1086
I think this is likely to be used a lot!

For UK businesses, if you want a listing in the local search system go to http://www.yell.com and sign up there. Google takes the data from Yell for its UK searches.

Looks like the UK version is already up and working:

Although maybe it needs a bit more testing. Searching for picture framers in Brecon returned information about an estate agent in Builth Wells!

Yes, the UK version has been running for a couple of months now, but there are localisation errors! Part of the problem is in the use of a search for a "non-standard" map search term. Try hotel or hospital and it works well, but other with terms it seems that they are run through Googles web search and the top appearing results with Yell entries are those that appear. A search for a placename also returns estate agents who sell property within that area.....

So, have you heard that rumour that Google is secretly run by a bunch of estate agents? Nah, can't be true or they'd never get around to doing anything. ;)
