FontExplorer X. Looks like iTunes and its free.I just downloaded it. There has been quite a bit of discussion about it on the type groups. It has some good features, including (according to the FontExplorer features list (http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX), anyway) auto-activation for most apps.

I see there is an older beta version for Windows (and Mac OS prior to X) that can also be downloaded; the final candidate 2 version (available for Mac OS 10.3.9 and up) is supposedly going to be available for Windows as well. Thought it was to be announced at ATypI, but that was last week, and I haven’t seen it yet.

FontExplorer is intended to make it easy to buy fonts from Linotype, I suppose (if you open a file and the font cannot be found on your system it will helpfully take you to the Lino font store on the web). Wonder if it is biased toward OT fonts, whether it works with fonts across a network, if sets can be saved, whether it does integrity checking, and so on.

But it sounds good, and it would be great to have a replacement for the late lamented ATM Deluxe! :-)

I wonder what they'll call the Windows version: there's already a free FontExplorer 2 for Windows that doesn't appear to have anything to do with font management. I downloaded it in April.

You're right, Michael. FontExplorer X is just a bad name. It has no relation to the Font Explorer Linotype released years ago.
